Why Does Donor Area Preservation Matter?

Look beyond a graft count and include donor appearance and future options in your planning discussion.

Recipient-area appearance can easily dominate a hair transplant consultation. The donor region remains part of your everyday appearance too. A balanced proposal considers both areas together.

Plan a resource, not a number

A high graft count does not automatically indicate a better plan. Ask why the count is proposed and how it would be distributed. Donor characteristics differ, so another person’s number is not a reliable comparison.

Discuss how you wear your hair

Wearing your hair very short can affect your expectations about donor appearance. Share this preference during assessment. Ask for a realistic explanation of the possible appearance and scarring after extraction.

Take a longer view

Possible changes to existing hair and the prospect of further procedures should be discussed. A plan needs to consider future choices as well as the current request. Use the questions in our donor area guide and be clear about your priorities and the limitations you would accept.
